Strathmore, AB -

Even at her young age, Kyla Anderson knew that she wanted to run her own business ... all she needed to do was figure out how to get started. Early in 2007, Kyla turned to Community Futures Wild Rose for help.

"I went to Community Futures for advice on what types of steps I had to take for getting started with my business," she says. "They also helped me with the steps needed to receive a small business loan for my start-up costs."

Because of her age, Kyla qualified for a Youth Business Loan, available to entrepreneurs aged 18-29. Kyla also participated in a series of workshops that took her through the many aspects of starting a business.

NV Hair & Body Studio opened Spring 2007, offering all hair salon services. Within six months, the clientele was more than the space could handle and Kyla expanded into the bay next door. At that time, she also increased her staff from three people, to seven. She is now operating a full service hair salon, a tanning studio, nail enhancement and aesthetic services. The business employs over a dozen people.

With this experience under her belt, Kyla's plans for the future include developing an Advanced Cutting Academy within the salon in order to encourage further education and provide job placement opportunities for future stylists.

Clearly, Kyla is committed not just to running a business, but to enhancing opportunity in the beauty industry for everyone in her community.
